AAC Instruction
Making it Effective, Efficient and Engaging!
This fast-paced workshop will suggest powerful AAC goals. I will share a framework for building in generalization of AAC skills. Specific interactive strategies, tools, and games will be suggested for each phase. The session will include demonstration and participant interaction at multiple points. Attendees will get access to a dropbox of materials. Guest speaker Krista Howard will share her ideas and how she supports learners as a model, mentor, and tutor.
Learning Outcomes: As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:
• Compose at least 2 potential learning targets for AAC intervention with your student or client that are both authentic and important to the learner
• Implement at least one light-tech and one high-tech tool to support learning and enhance engagement
• Identify one strategy from each of the components of the Rehearse, Practice, Model,- GO framework

Dr. Caroline Musselwhite
Dr. Caroline Musselwhite is an assistive technology specialist with more than 30 years of experience working with children and adolescents with severe disabilities, in a variety of settings, including Head Start, developmental day programs, and the public schools. She has also taught courses at several universities, including West Virginia University, and Western Carolina University. She has also coordinated Communication Circles and Balanced Literacy Club Projects in school districts in Massachusetts, New York, Florida, Arizona, Illinois, and Kingston, Ontario.
Dr. Musselwhite has authored a number of textbooks and “how-to” books on a range of topics, including Emergent Literacy Success, Communication Programming for Persons with Severe Handicaps, and Reading Activities Project for Older Students (R.A.P.S.). She has also authored a number of software programs (Write to Talk, Social Scripts) and books (Learning to Work) for youth with disabilities. She has presented thousands of workshops throughout the world, and is a founding member of the Board of Directors for the International Society for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (ISAAC). Honors include: Foundation Fellowship (West Virginia University), Educator of the Year (Association for Retarded Citizens, North Carolina), Honors of the Association, (North Carolina Augmentative Communication Association), and DiCarlo Outstanding Clinician Award (North Carolina Speech-Language-Hearing Association), and ISAAC Fellow.
