November
Tip of the Month at this website for ideas on organizing communication
symbol boards and symbols using sheet protectors. Those sheet protectors
can be placed in a three ring binder. Velcro sensitive material can
then be hot glued to the binder cover. Thus, symbols can be attached
to the cover for communication purposes as well. The velcro sensitive
material was purchased through Early
Childhood.com and was hot glued to the cover of old three ring binders.

Holiday Activities
This year at CESA 10 in Chippewa Falls, WI, we are holding monthly AAC/AT
Interest group meetings. The theme for our November 2000 meeting
was holidays. Ideas and activities shared included the following:
Michelle Huber,
Physical Therapist and Sheryl Balcair, Speech/Language Pathologist of Medford
Elementary School in Medford, WI attended the Closing the Gap conference
in October. They shared ideas they had learned and adapted from that
conference. The idea pictured above was to create 3 large dice.
On one dice, they placed pictures of their students. The next held
action choices and the third contained symbols representing location concepts.
Students could then take turns rolling to see who would do what action
in an obstacle course created by Michelle. Thus, they were addressing
students speech/language and physical therapy goals all within one activity.
Michelle and Sheryl plan their activities during a joint 1/2 hour
planning session per week.
Michelle and Sheryl also shared the following theme based activity ideas:
THEME: THANKSGIVING - Week 1
Story/Flannelboard Activity: Tommy Turkey
AAC/AT
Overlay with animals and colors (CheapTalk 8)
Picture of a turkey (BIGmack/One-Step: program "Ha, ha, ha, ho, ho,
hee. You're the funniest turkey I ever did see."
Props
Fine Motor Activity: Prepare Pinata
Snip feathers
Dip newspaper (cut into shapes) into mixture
Put newspaper shapes onto balloon
AAC/AT
Overlay with colors/shapes/sizes
Gross Motor Activity: "Pin the Feathers on the Turkey"
Obstacle Course (hula hoops to jump into/out of, balance beam, stairs to
walk up/down)
Students stand on top stair and reach to put their feather on the turkey
AAC/AT:
Overlay with colors/shapes/sizes
Carryover Activity: The students will have to paint
the turkey and put the feathers on it during the week within their classroom.
THEME: THANKSGIVING - Week 2
Story: 'Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving
AAC/AT
Overlay with comments (Voice-in-a-Box)
Book adapted so each page has a picture at the bottom that matches a comment
on the Voice-in-a-Box overlay

This was an idea Michelle and Sheryl picked up at Closing the Gap.
They choose a single symbol which best represented the text on each page
of the book. That symbol was placed in the story book and students
could match the symbol in their book to the symbol on their voice output
system to read that page.
Gross Motor Activity: Breaking the Pinata
Attach the pinata to the hook used for the swing
Spin around
Hit the pinata with a bat
AAC/AT:
Overlay with pictures of all the children
Students who can't swing the bat can choose who gets the next turn
Fine Motor Activity: Picking up Candy
Use tongs to pick up candy and put it in a cup
Unwrap a piece of candy and eat!
AAC/AT
Overlay with comments such as "Yum!", "Yuck!", "Ooh this is sour!" etc.
(Voice-in-a-Box)
THEME: HIBERNATION
Story: Brown Bear, Brown Bear
AAC/AT
BIGmack/One-Step: Program "What do you see?"
Overlay with colors, animals (Voice-in-a-Box 16 and CheapTalk 8)
Overlays
and activity sheets were stored in an easel:
Fine Motor Activity: Make Bear Cave
Have a big box ready with a hole cut out in front big enough for the kids
to crawl into
Paint/decorate box as a cave - use your imagination!
Gross Motor Activity: Brown Bear, Brown Bear, Sleep
Play as Duck, Duck, Goose
Kids sit in circle around bear cave
BIGmack: Program "Sleep", Step-by-step: Program: "brown bear,
brown bear, sleep"
When a student gets caught they have to crawl into the cave and "sleep"
Stair work can be added by having a step stool in the middle of the circle
in front of the cave - kids have to travel "over the mountain" to get into
the cave.
THEME: SCARECROWS
Story: The Little Scarecrow Boy
AAC/AT
2 BIGmacks/One-Steps: Program "Oh, oh, oh" and "No, boy"
Have kids make funny faces along with the scarecrow boy.
Fine Motor Activity: Make Scarecrows
crumple paper
button scarecrow shirt
zip pants
stuff clothing (language can be worked on with this by having an IntelliKeys
set up with the clothing choices)
IntelliKeys
Overlay Voice-in-a-Box
Overlay
Gross Motor Activity: Big Dice Action (see picture with Michelle
& Sheryl above)
3 dice; 1 with pictures of all the kids on the sides, 1 with action verbs
(e.g. jump, march, roll, etc.) and 1 with location (around the scarecrow,
behind the scarecrow, between the scarecrows)
Children take turns rolling the dice, the student(s) whose picture turns
up has to do the action that turns up in the location that turns up
Thanks Michelle & Sheryl for your enthusiasm, creativity
and sharing!!
Winter Bingo
The adaptations for this activity were created by Julie Maro.
1) Select target vocabulary
2) Create Bingo Boards using BoardMaker
Boards can be created to address symbol/picture matching and/or word
matching.
3) Print duplicate copies of the symbol boards
4) Cut apart one copy
5) Laminate symbols
6) If necessary, attach velcro to bingo boards so symbols won't
come off
Use IntelliPics to create a "Bingo Caller" routine. This could
be accessed via an IntelliKeys, Touch Window, mouse and/or single switch.
Make two copies of the IntelliPics overlay. Symbols from the second
board can be used on other devices such as an AbleNet All-TurnIt spinner.
Another use for the symbols is to create picture directions for the
children to use when getting dressed. These can be placed individually
into a book such as an index card holder (available at Wal-Mart and includes
pre-punched index cards).

As the pages are flipped in the index card book, the child is given
a visual of what clothing item they need to put on next. For example:
snow suit, boots, jacket, hat, mittens
An "all done" symbol can be placed at the end.
